NCERT Class 11 Chemistry: Key Topics for JEE Main
Class 11 Chemistry contributes roughly 40% of the JEE Main Chemistry paper — a share that many aspirants underestimate while spending most of their time on Class 12 topics. This guide ranks the Class 11 Chemistry chapters by exam contribution and tells you exactly which NCERT sections to study deeply versus skim, so you invest your time where it generates the most marks.

Chemical Equilibrium and Ionic Equilibrium (combined 4-5 marks): K_eq, Q_c, Le Chatelier's principle, degree of dissociation, pH of weak acids/bases, buffer solutions, Henderson-Hasselbalch equation, Ksp and common ion effect. These chapters appear in every session. Read NCERT Chapters 7 and 7 (Equilibrium) deeply and do all solved examples. See our chemical equilibrium guide for extended treatment.
Chemical Bonding and Molecular Structure (3-4 marks): Lewis structures, VSEPR theory, hybridisation, molecular geometry, polarity, molecular orbital theory (H₂, N₂, O₂ MO diagrams, bond order, magnetic properties). NCERT Chapter 4 — read every example, every table, every diagram. The paramagnetism of O₂ (from MO theory) and the shape of XeF₄ (VSEPR) are perennial JEE questions that come directly from this chapter. Take a free chemical bonding mock.
Tier 2: High Priority (Reliable Marks)
Structure of Atom (2-3 marks): quantum numbers (n, l, m_l, m_s), orbital shapes (s, p, d), Pauli exclusion principle, Hund's rule, Aufbau principle, electronic configurations including exceptions (Cr: [Ar]3d⁵4s¹, Cu: [Ar]3d¹⁰4s¹), photoelectric effect (Einstein equation), de Broglie wavelength. NCERT Chapter 2 — every paragraph contains potential JEE material. Focus especially on the four quantum numbers (their meaning, allowed values, and what they determine), and the anomalous electronic configurations of Cr and Cu.
Thermodynamics (2-3 marks): first law (ΔU = q + w), enthalpy, Hess's law, standard enthalpies (formation, combustion, neutralisation, bond dissociation), Kirchhoff's equation, entropy (S), Gibbs free energy (G = H − TS, ΔG° = −RT lnK), spontaneity criterion. NCERT Chapter 6 — all worked examples and all standard enthalpy tables. See our chemical thermodynamics guide.

Basic Principles of Organic Chemistry (Chapter 12): IUPAC nomenclature, hybridisation effects on acidity (sp > sp² > sp³ carbon attached to H), inductive and mesomeric effects, electron-withdrawing vs electron-donating groups, resonance structures, hyperconjugation, reactive intermediates (carbocations, carbanions, free radicals, carbenes). Every point in this chapter connects to questions in Organic Chemistry — it is the foundation. Students who skip it fail to understand why reactions proceed the way they do. Hydrocarbons (Chapter 13): preparation and properties of alkanes, alkenes, alkynes, and benzene (electrophilic aromatic substitution — nitration, halogenation, sulphonation, Friedel-Crafts). JEE tests 1-2 questions directly from hydrocarbons per session.
Tier 3: Quick Wins (Low Time, Reliable Marks)
States of Matter (1-2 marks): gas laws, kinetic theory, van der Waals equation, liquefaction of gases, viscosity and surface tension. Read NCERT and do numerical examples — straightforward calculation questions. s-Block Elements (1-2 marks): group 1 and group 2 chemistry — anomalous behaviour of Li and Be, diagonal relationships, important compounds (NaOH, Na₂CO₃, CaO, Ca(OH)₂, plaster of Paris, cement). NCERT reading is sufficient. Hydrogen (1 mark): ortho and para hydrogen, hydrides (ionic, covalent, metallic), water (hydrogen bonding, heavy water D₂O).
